A Tim Hortons Double Double is a brewed coffee with two creams and two sugars. That is the whole recipe. The name is not a separate drink on the menu board; it is the way Canadians tell the counter how to build the cup, and the company prints the build by name in its own nutrition guide.
This page sets out what the name means, what each build costs in calories and sugar at each size, and how to order the cup you want. Every figure is built from the official Tim Hortons Nutrition Guide, Canadian Edition, July 2026, the same build this site uses on its coffee cards and its calculator: the black coffee for the size, plus the guide’s own cream and sugar rows.

Double Double at a glance
- The build: brewed coffee, two creams, two sugars
- Calories, built: Small 143, Medium 194, Large 255, Extra Large 305
- Sugar in a Medium: 20 g
- Caffeine: the same as the coffee in it, 140 to 330 mg by size
- Price: the same as a black coffee of the same size at most stores
- Cup sizes: Small 296 mL, Medium 414 mL, Large 591 mL, Extra Large 710 mL
What the names mean
Every name at the coffee counter is a count: creams first, then sugars. One serving is sized to the cup, so a serving in a Small is a smaller pour than a serving in an Extra Large. The official guide shows it plainly: its cream serving runs from 40 calories in a Small to 90 in an Extra Large.
Double Double: two creams and two sugars. Tim Hortons uses the name itself. The guide prints a Double Double Coffee row, and the company describes the drink on its own site as a Canadian classic: two shots of cream and two shots of sugar with the original brewed coffee. The word was added to the Canadian Oxford Dictionary in 2004, defined there as a cup of coffee with a double serving of both sugar and cream.
Regular: one cream and one sugar. Regular is the company’s own name for the one and one build, and the guide prints Regular Coffee rows for it.
Single Single: the same one cream and one sugar under its everyday matching name. It is common counter usage rather than a name the guide prints; order either name and the cup is the same.
Triple Triple: three creams and three sugars. Common counter usage across Canada. The guide prints no Triple Triple row, so the figures on this page are built from its cream and sugar rows.
4×4: four creams and four sugars, also said as four by four. Common usage only. Past three of each, the counter works in plain numbers, so give the count you want.
The Wayne Gretzky: nine creams and nine sugars, named for the number 99 on his jersey. This is a fan name that spread online, not an official menu name, and it is not the same order as a 4×4. If you want one, order it by the numbers, nine by nine, and expect a very sweet cup. This page prints no figures for it, because no official source does.
Black: nothing added at all. Order it black and the cup is coffee only, at 3 to 5 calories in any size.
The numbers, build by build
Each figure below is the black coffee for that size plus the guide’s cream and sugar rows, added serving by serving. Fat follows the cream: a Medium Double Double carries 12 g of fat, all of it from its two cream servings.
Calories by build and size:
| Build | Small | Medium | Large | Extra Large |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black (0 creams, 0 sugars) | 3 cal | 4 cal | 5 cal | 5 cal |
| Single Single / Regular (1 and 1) | 73 cal | 99 cal | 130 cal | 155 cal |
| Double Double (2 and 2) | 143 cal | 194 cal | 255 cal | 305 cal |
| Triple Triple (3 and 3) | 213 cal | 289 cal | 380 cal | 455 cal |
| 4×4 (4 and 4) | 283 cal | 384 cal | 505 cal | 605 cal |
Sugar by build and size:
| Build | Small | Medium | Large | Extra Large |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black | 0 g | 0 g | 0 g | 0 g |
| Single Single / Regular | 8 g | 10 g | 14 g | 17 g |
| Double Double | 16 g | 20 g | 28 g | 34 g |
| Triple Triple | 24 g | 30 g | 42 g | 51 g |
| 4×4 | 32 g | 40 g | 56 g | 68 g |
Read the tables by column and the pattern is clear: the jump from one size to the next is mostly the bigger servings, not more coffee. A Medium Double Double at 194 calories is not far off two Small ones, and an Extra Large Triple Triple at 455 calories pours more calories than any single coffee on the hot board.
How it compares
Against black coffee, the build is the whole story. A Medium poured black is 4 calories. Built as a Double Double, the same cup is 194: the two cream servings add 120 calories and the two sugar servings add 70. Nothing about the coffee itself changed.
Against the frozen drinks, a Double Double is the lighter sweet order. A Medium Original Iced Capp runs 330 calories with 42 g of sugar in the official guide. A Medium Double Double is 194 calories with 20 g of sugar, a sweet coffee that still sits well under the frozen cup.
Caffeine does not move with the build. Cream and sugar add none, so a Double Double carries the caffeine of the coffee poured into it. On the company’s published figures for Original Blend, that is 140 mg in a Small, 205 mg in a Medium, 270 mg in a Large and 330 mg in an Extra Large. The full chart sits on the Caffeine Guide.
How to order it
At the counter, put the size first and then the name: a medium Double Double. Staff pour Original Blend unless you name another coffee, so say a large Dark Roast double double or a decaf double double when that is the cup you want.
For anything outside the named builds, give the numbers instead of a name: two milks, one sugar, or one cream, no sugar. To swap the dairy, say so in the order, as in a double double with milk, which trades the cream servings for milk.
In the Tim Hortons app, pick the coffee and the size, then set the cream count and the sugar count to two and two in the drink options before you add it to your order.
